Accessing Dissertations

Q1. How do I use the dissertations of NCCU Library?

  1.  All NCCU dissertations and theses as parts of the NCCUer Collections are stored on the 5th to 7th floors of the Dah Hsian Seetoo Library. To protect the integrity of these research materials and due to the difficulty of obtaining duplicates, all dissertations and theses in the Dah Hsian Seetoo Library are only for in-library use.

  2. The Commerce Library and the Communication Library also hold copies of some theses and dissertations of their respective colleges (as indicated in the library catalog). These materials are available for loan in accordance with the borrowing regulations.

  3. Theses and dissertations from other colleges are stored  in compact shelves.  Please fill  online applications for closed stacks retrieval services. 
  4. Readers may photocopy or scan necessary parts of the academic materials. Nevertheless, any copying must strictly comply with intellectual property laws.

 

Q2. Where are doctoral dissertations located?

  1. Doctoral dissertations and master's theses are located at the Dah Hsian Seetoo Library. The call number of doctoral dissertations includes a “D” to differentiate them; e.g.,Ｄ1.11, 1.11 are displayed on the 1.11 shelf. Readers must notice, however, that the call number of doctoral dissertations has a “D” added at the beginning.
  2. NCCU theses and dissertations are located on the receding terrace shelves from 5th to 7th floor.
  3. Theses and dissertations from other colleges held in compact shelves. All materials are accessible through closed stacks retrieval services.

 

 

Q3. Why are the dissertations of certain universities impossible to find or incomplete?

In accordance with Article 16 of the amended Degree Authorization Act, the National Central Library is the only depository library for doctoral dissertations and master's theses in the country. Hence, beginning in 1997, some universities have not presented free copies of dissertations to NCCU:

  1. National Taiwan University: up till 1997.
  2. National Tsinghua University: up till 1995.
  3. Soochow University: up till 1996.
  4. Tunghai University: up till 1997.
  5. National Sun Yat-Sen University: up till 1997.
  6. Providence University: Incomplete collection since 1997. Did not present free dissertations in 1998. Reverted to presenting dissertations in 1999.
  7. Tamkang University: up till 1998.

In consideration of the trend of collection and digitization development, and the National Central Library's collection of national theses & dissertations, NCCU Library has stopped collecting dissertations and theses of other universities.

 

Q4. Why does the "National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan" (NDLTD in Taiwan) of National Central Library have this dissertation, but I can't locate it in the Dah Hsian Seetoo Library, even the catalog of NCCU library?

The bibliographic records in “National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan” (NDLTD in Taiwan) was provided by universities to National Central Library. Recent years, universities are no longer sending their dissertations to NCCU. Thus, if the dissertation comes from “NDLTD in Taiwan”, please check in the NCCU library catalog again, to confirm whether we have the dissertation or not.
