IV. Exhibition Introduction

Titled “Amidst Flames and Turmoil: An Unshaken NCCU” this exhibition looks back on the crucial development of National Chengchi University from its founding in Nanjing to the period before its relocation to Taiwan. NCCU was born in an era of profound upheaval, and its development has always been closely intertwined with the fate of the nation. From the founding of the Central Party Institute and the institutional development of the Central Political Institute, to the westward relocation of the school during the War of Resistance and its postwar reorganization as a national university, the history of NCCU was deeply interwoven with the wars, politics, and social transformations of modern China.

Focusing on the transformation of school administration, educational practice, and the activities of faculty and students, this exhibition traces how NCCU continued to provide education and cultivate talent amid prolonged warfare and rapidly changing circumstances, responding to the nation's urgent need for personnel in governance and reconstruction. Under the wartime system, the school adjusted its academic structure and curriculum in response to practical needs, shifting from academic training toward a more practice-oriented model of talent cultivation. It also gradually established a civil service training system, closely linking education with the operation of the state and highlighting the school’s capacity for institutional adaptation and response to the times.

At the same time, the exhibition also examines the choices and actions of young people in an age of turmoil. Some faculty members and students left the campus for the battlefield, dedicating themselves to the nation in its hour of crisis and taking on the mission of their time through concrete action. These experiences not only speak to individual choices, but also reflect the responsibility and significance borne by a university at a critical moment in history.

The title “Amidst Flames and Turmoil: An Unshaken NCCU” evokes both the historical context of unceasing warfare and NCCU's pivotal role amid sweeping change: maintaining the function of education in a time of instability, and supporting the nation and society through the cultivation of talent. As NCCU reaches the milestone of its 99th anniversary, this exhibition presents and interprets archives, photographs, and historical documents not only to review the university's past, but also to invite reflection on the future. It seeks to guide visitors in understanding the spirit and mission that NCCU has carried throughout its history, deepening historical awareness and emotional connection to its century-long journey while also encouraging reflection on the institutional role and historical significance of education in pivotal times.
