“Scholarship is like iron, and wisdom is the electric spark that forges steel.”
Lo Chia-luen

On the occasion of National Chengchi University's (NCCU) anniversary celebration, this exhibition revisits the life and academic legacy of one of its founding figures—Lo Chia-luen. The exhibition title is drawn from his name, symbolizing the continuation of a scholarly mission..

Lo Chia-luen devoted his life to education and scholarship. He participated in the May Fourth Movement, advocating for the use of vernacular Chinese and the promotion of modern thought. During his studies in Europe and the United States, he absorbed the essence of both Chinese and Western intellectual traditions. Upon returning to China, he held key positions at institutions including National Chengchi University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Central University, where he promoted institutional reform and talent recruitment—laying a foundation for modern higher education in China.

In 1947, he was appointed the Republic of China's first ambassador to India, where he demonstrated outstanding diplomatic skills and established deep friendships with international leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru. In his later years, he dedicated himself to historical documentation and cultural preservation, overseeing the compilation of national and party histories and leaving behind invaluable records of his time.

Beyond his rational mind and scholarly rigor, the exhibition highlights a more intimate side of Lo through the Letters of Affection section, which presents tender and heartfelt correspondence between him and his family.

In 2013, Professor Jiu-Fong Lo Chang, daughter of Mr. Lo, donated over 13,000 volumes of his personal collection and published works to NCCU. She subsequently donated manuscripts, historical documents, and other archival materials. As the steward of this significant academic legacy, the university has continued to organize, preserve, and manage these resources, gradually establishing the Lo Chia-luen Collection.

Through this special exhibition and its public presentation, we invite visitors to explore the life and work of Lo Chia-luen, and to witness how he dedicated himself fully to the ideals of education and cultural mission. It is our hope that the historical materials presented here will not only serve as important artifacts and exhibits, but also become an important resource for inspiring future scholars.
