“Q2: Once a student authorizes the copyright of the degree thesis/dissertation to the University, what will the University do with students’ copyright?”

Once a student authorizes the copyright of the degree thesis/dissertation to the University, our first priority is to fully guarantee the student’s copyright, so that the student’s works will not be pledged or abused. Secondly, the University will collaborate with digitalization industry to operate the authorized works with added digital value, imitating overseas degree thesis/dissertation database industries such as UMI to proceed with various value-added operation and promotion, so that our students’ intellectual property will help to motivate the application of domestic academia.

“Q3: What does non-exclusive authorization mean?”

The theses/dissertations full-text imaging system at the University currently adopts the method of “non-exclusive authorization”, meaning that once a student authorizes part of the copyright non-exclusively to the University, you are still entitled to the authorized rights which will not be affected by the part of authorization to NCCU; in other words, you will still be able to authorize others to make use of your electronic thesis/dissertation in the future.
blank image
“Q4: Do I have the right not to authorize?”

Copyright is the basic right any author has towards one’s own work, the author (student) may decide to authorize the University or not for value-added operations under one’s freewill. If the student choose to authorize the University the right to value-added operations, the student’s degree thesis/dissertation will be transmitted digitally, giving it more channels and opportunities to be seen, and continue to benefit future schoolmates or other researchers. Should the student decide not to authorize the University the right to value-added operation, the student’s degree thesis/dissertation can only remain in the traditional paper copy sitting on shelves in the Library, waiting to be borrowed by readers. However, the effect of promoting the knowledge will be greatly decreased. Therefore, we humbly suggest that all students authorize this service with your copyrights.
