Call Number

Introduction to Call Numbers

All books in the library are assigned a unique call number, usually found on the spine of the book. Record the call number as you have located an item you need in Library catalogue, for the call number is like an address as to the exact location of the book on the shelves.


1. Classifications

CJK items are classified by New Classification Scheme for Chinese Libraries and Ho Jih-chang Chinese Decimal Classification.

Foreign items are classified by Dewey Decimal Classification.

2. Elements of a Call Number

A call number generally consists of two or three elements. Take the above R350 636 for example, the letter "R" stands for the type of resources as a reference, 350 represents the subject or discipline of the book and 636 represents the author number.
